Cyber Security for SCADA systems – RAD

December 7th, 2017

The adequate protection of SCADA systems, in CI – Critical Infrastructure – like utilities, transportation and government applications, can no longer be guaranteed just with a firewall, or a similar single-layer defense.

Messages may arrive from invalid sources or include manipulated commands that may harm the system. Remote devices are typically interconnected using Ethernet-based protocols (DNP 3, MODBUS, IEC 60870-5-104, etc.), which connect them to the center. It is important to ensure that all communicated messages are genuine, sent from authorized sources and do not carry malware. They must be communicated securely, and their integrity has to be properly reconfirmed.

Since most destructive attacks originate within the organization (from disgruntled employees, for example) and, hence, bypass physical security, this distributed security requirement is critical and offers rigid access-control granularity.
